Florida Manatees

During your stay you holiday villas in Orlando Florida, Disney World or in the private rental home, we strongly suggest to take some time to see manatees.

Manatees are sometimes called "sea cows, and are one of the loveliest creatures you can found in Florida. They are creatures of the sea are very soft and most herbivores. They graze in shallow waters off the coast of Florida, or in rivers. They feed on many different types of plants whose leaves of mangroves, and even certain types of algae. If you look very close to the face, you will realize that they have a split upper lip allowing them to eat the plants easily. Surprisingly, an adult manatee can eat about 9% of their body weight per day, which could reach about 30 pounds of weight. They only have six teeth, which continues to fall and then replaced.

Manatees can reach a length of 9 feet and 10 feet and can weigh up 1200 kg, females are heavier. They can not swim very fast, usually about 3-5 miles per hour, but can swim at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour short time periods. The manatee uses its tail as a paddle to propel themselves along, as he slips into the water.

The manatee baby weighs 15 pounds impressive and an adult can live for anything up to 60 years. Reproduce every two years, their gestation period is about 12 months. They give birth to one calf, feeding his mother until 18 months. In fact, manatees are very intelligent, and can demonstrate the kind of learning task and discrimination in general relationship with dolphins. They also show signs of having a long-term memory and be able to understand the discrimination tasks. Unlike dolphins, however, the manatee is generally a solitary creature and spends most of his life.

Florida is the ideal place to live as manatees have a low metabolic rate, which means that can not withstand temperatures cold. In fact, they can not survive temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius, they migrate to the currents flowing in the hot springs winter months.

If you want to see manatees in the winter, Crystal River and Blue Springs are the places to visit. Here the water is kept at a constant temperature 22 degrees Celsius throughout the year, if the manatees congregate around these hot springs.

Unfortunately, manatees are vulnerable. A Although they have few natural enemies outside of sharks, whales, crocodiles and alligators, it is man made hazards, which are the main problem. Manatees are particularly susceptible to injury from boats and their propellers. Many manatees bear scars altercations with motor boats, and injuries are often fatal. In fact, is illegal under Florida law to cause injury or harm manatees. However, while the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission does not recognize them as being in danger, should be protected, and that reported by them as "threatened" even though under federal law, are still endangered.

If you have opportunity to visit Orlando in the winter months, from mid-November, then take the opportunity to visit one of their winter habitats. They are delicious and not aggressive creatures are very curious. A visit to Crystal River and Blue Springs will be useful, such as manatees congregate in the warm waters of the springs. You can even swim with them here.

Crystal River visited some time ago and had a tour to swim with manatees and there was a wonderful experience and we recommend it highly. The trip starts early (around 6:30) because it is the best time to see them in action. It is equipped with a combination wet suit, fins, snorkel, and even an underwater camera to take some memorable photos. The floats are available for people who are not very good swimmers. We were trapped in the river where manatees live and met about 20 minutes later. Please aware that there is no guarantee that you will see that most of the time are there. The captain left the ship and we are on the very, very cold water to look around. The captain of the boat makes a trip a day and we were able spend as much time as we liked in the water. We had about two hours and have not been pushed back to the boat at all. We swam with manatees around, stroking and took pictures. I strongly recommend this trip to everyone.
